Tips to Help Your Family Develop a Nature-Inspired & Outdoor Lifestyle
Our family thrives outdoors. We’ve intentionally chosen to live a lifestyle that keeps us connected with nature every day — and it has become the heartbeat of our family life.
Some of my favorite memories from childhood are camping trips, nature drives, and exploring the wilderness around my home. Tim and I both grew up surrounded by the outdoors, and it shaped who we are today. That same love of the natural world has inspired the way we raise our own family, from homesteading and homeschooling to starting our local nature club.
For us, nature isn’t just a backdrop — it’s food for the soul. It grounds us, heals us, inspires us, and creates memories we cherish far more than any theme park ever could. Our children agree — their most meaningful moments are the simple ones outside together.
The secret? Consistency. Regularly spending time in nature has been the key to cultivating this love. Here are some of my best tips to help your family grow into a nature-inspired lifestyle too:
🌿 Simple Tips for Building a Nature-Inspired Lifestyle
Allow for Daily Outdoor Play
Give your kids several hours each day to be free outside. No structure — just time to explore, create, and discover. If they aren’t used to being outdoors much, start small with short bursts and gradually increase as they grow more comfortable.
Limit Screen Time
Screens can dull curiosity and make it harder for kids to want to go outside. By limiting or removing daily screen use, you’ll open the door for them to get creative, explore, and naturally seek the outdoors instead. In our home, we save movies for family nights and keep everyday screen use minimal.
Take Regular Family Walks
Walking together is a simple way to move your body, connect as a family, and notice the beauty around you. Whether you’re in the city or countryside, use your senses — listen for birds, watch the clouds, touch the bark of a tree — and turn your walks into little adventures.
Plant a Family Garden
Growing food together is one of the most rewarding ways to connect with nature. From tiny container gardens to larger raised beds, gardening teaches responsibility, patience, and the joy of harvesting food you’ve nurtured as a family.
Go Camping
Camping helps you unplug fully and immerse yourself in the natural world. Leave devices behind (or at least turned off) and give yourself the gift of stillness, starry skies, and late-night campfire talks. These memories will stay with your kids forever.
Learn About Nature as a Family
Read nature stories, explore field guides, and keep nature journals. Then head outdoors to discover what you’ve learned in real life. This makes homeschooling and family life more exciting as the lessons come alive before your eyes.
Create a Nature Nook at Home
Dedicate a small space in your home — a shelf, a mantel, or a table to display treasures found on walks or vacations. Rocks, feathers, leaves, shells, and pinecones spark curiosity and lead to more learning about the natural world.
Take Your Homeschool Lessons Outdoors
A change of scenery can be inspiring. Read books, do math, or write journals under a tree at the park or in the backyard. Fresh air helps kids focus and makes studies feel less like work and more like discovery.
Join (or start) a Nature Club
Exploring nature with other families adds community and excitement. If you don’t have one nearby, start your own! It’s simple, and kids love sharing the adventure with friends.
Make Family Nature Goals
Each year, set intentions for how your family will connect with nature. Maybe it’s hiking a certain number of miles, visiting national parks, or spending a specific amount of hours outdoors. Write your goals down, track them, and celebrate your progress.
Lead By Example
Kids mirror what they see. If you go outside, explore, and appreciate the natural world, your children will too. Let them catch you pausing to admire a flower, listen to birdsong, or sit quietly under the sun.
Start Small, Grow Big
You don’t have to do everything at once. Start with one or two of these ideas, and over time you’ll see your family’s love for nature grow deeper and stronger.
Nature offers peace, connection, wellness, and joy — and those gifts are waiting for you right outside your door.
✨ May your family’s days be filled with fresh air, muddy boots, starry skies, and the kind of memories that last a lifetime.
